The Author's Chair and Beyond : Language and Literacy in a Primary Classroom
Published in Paperback by Heinemann (March, 1993)
Author: Ellen Blackburn Karelitz
Average review score:

My Thoughts on The Author's Chair and Beyond
Children have a great imagination, and this book is great to have when you are starting to teach young children how to write. Great ideas are given such as what materials to have in writing centers and how to go about using the writing center. Karelitz pretty much explains that the writing process for children is much like the writing process taken for adults and if you can have the children use this process and make them feel comfortable while using the method, it is a great success. "The Authors Chair" is a must have book for teaching children the essentials to becoming a great writer. This is also a must have book for those of you in the teaching profession and those wanting to become educators. It was fun to read and it fills you with ideas and great teaching techniques used in teaching the writing process.

Best Hikes With Children in Vermont, New Hampshire, & Maine
Published in Paperback by Mountaineers Books (October, 1991)
Authors: Cynthia C. Lewis and Thomas J. Lewis
Average review score:

Useful but not comprehensive
A good book which largely delivers what it promises. However, it is best used in conjunction with a more comprehensive map and/or guide, if you're visiting a particular region. Give it 4.5 stars.

Good Points: 1) The author points out "kid-friendly" features on hikes and gives good descriptions. 2) Most of the hikes have pretty good thumbnail maps

Drawbacks: 1) Introductory map could be better (more detailed) to help reader find trails 2) Some hikes lack thumbnail maps. Why? 3) Abilities of children vary wildly. We found that a "moderate" hike can be strenuous for an inexperienced or out-of-shape child (or adult, for that matter).

Frommer's Vermont New Hampshire & Maine (Frommer's Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, 1st Ed)
Published in Paperback by Hungry Minds, Inc (September, 1998)
Author: Wayne Curtis
Average review score:

Lovely Northern New England
Frommer's guidebook provides an excellent overview of the sights to see, things to do, and places to stay in the three Northern New England states of New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine. The overviews are very accurate and provide a good description of the places, making the book an excellent way to decide where to go in the areas, and a good guidebook once you arrive.

The biggest problem with the book is that there is not enough individual descriptions of each area. Chances are most tourists are not visiting several regions in all three states, but are choosing one or two to explore in-depth. For example, I went to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park in Maine, an area that was given around 20 pages of coverage. Therefore, more research on the specific areas you plan to visit will probably be necessary to help you get the absolute most out of your trip!

Gosport Remembered: The Last Village at the Isles of Shoals
Published in Paperback by Portsmouth Marine Society (01 July, 2002)
Authors: Peter E. Randalll and Maryellen Burke
Average review score:

GOSPORT REMEMBERED is a rare piece of history
This book probably has limited appeal, but is valuable in that it shows a parting view of an authentic New England fishing village that vanished when the hotel on Star Island was built in the 1870s. The text and photographs of the fishing village are priceless for those who have visited Star Island. A fascinating bit of history.

History of the Sixth New Hampshire Regiment in the War for the Union
Published in Hardcover by Old Books Publishing Company (October, 1996)
Author: Lyman Jackman
Average review score:

An excellent Regimental History
If you are looking for a History of one of the toughest Fighting Units in the Civil War, this book is for you. The 6th NHVI fought in over 22 engagements and traversed over 17 states, the men fought in battles such as Fredricksburg, Antietam, VIcksburg, and The Mine at Petersburg. This regimental History takes you through the war as seen through the eyes of the men of the Granite State. Many men had never seen anywhere outside of their own County at home. This Regimental provides accurate accounts of the battles, and also amusing incidents and Biographies of the more well known commanding officers. It is a great book to read, It has large print and is very easy to read as well. Even though it looks as though most of it has been photocopied, and some areas have letters missing, but all in all a very good book.

John Paul Jones and the Ranger: Portsmouth, New Hampshire July 12-November 1, 1777 and the Log of the Ranger November 1, 1777-May 18, 1778 (Publicat)
Published in Hardcover by Portsmouth Marine Society (March, 1998)
Author: Joseph G. Sawtelle
Average review score:

An Interesting collection of historical documents
An insight into a complicated man's mind. This book is for historians who are trying to put together their own pictures of John Paul Jones. Most people would find this book dull and for them I would recommend one of the many books written about the founder of the American Navy.
